Le terre del Malanotte tra storia e leggenda
Laggiù dove il Piave mormora per lo più calmo e placido al passaggio delle stagioni, nella morbida pianura che si estende tra le province di Treviso e Venezia, la vite è vita sin dai tempi antichi. Tre millenni di storia nei quali le viti sono cresciute e crescono su terreni plasmati dai sedimenti che il fiume sacro alla Patria trascina con sé dalle Dolomiti alla pianura. L’area della Doc Piave presenta una grande varietà di terreni e microclimi che consente di ottenere vini particolarmente differenziati tra loro come è emerso anche dagli studi della Zonazione; frutti di una terra generosa ma anche di una tradizione vitivinicola aperta da sempre alla ricerca e alla sperimentazione. I Vini del Piave tramandano da millenni il vigore dei Paleoveneti, portano con sé il fascino delle antichità classiche e gli incantevoli fasti della Serenissima. Hanno l’anima forgiata dalla guerra, esprimono l’entusiasmo della rinascita ed un sentimento sincero di amore per la terra. La terra del Piave.
Steeped in history and legend: The Italy of Malanotte
In this part of Italy, where the Piave River f lows as calmly as the passing of the seasons across the gentle plains between Treviso and Venice, the vine has been a part of life since ancient times. For three thousand years, grapes have been cultivated here on land shaped by the sediment that the river washes down from the Dolomites. With its diverse soils and microclimates, the Piave DOC (registered designation of origin) area produces a surprising variety of wines. And while they’re the fruit of this rich land, they’re also the result of a winemaking tradition that has always been open to new ideas. Still ref lecting the vitality of the original inhabitants of this region, the wines of the Piave Valley embody the enchantment of antiquity and the splendour of the Republic of Venice. They have a heart forged in war, expressing a passion for renewal and a genuine love of this land.
Nel cuore delle terre del Piave sorge un antico borgo, guardiano di tradizioni secolari, testimone di aristocratiche ricchezze, custode di segreti mai rivelati. Borgo Malanotte a Tezze di Piave (Vazzola) è noto ai viandanti sin da tempi remoti. Da quando trafficanti paleoveneti, predoni barbari, pellegrini medioevali e serenissimi mercanti si accingevano ad attraversare il Piave presso il Guado di Lovadina. Nel XVII secolo l’antico maso diventa ‘borgo’ e sul finire del secolo assume il nome dei nuovi blasonati proprietari, i “Malanotti” o “Malenotti”, una delle più illustri nobili famiglie trentine. All’inizio del Seicento un ramo della famiglia si trasferisce a Venezia per intraprendere il mestiere di mercante di stoffe e quando, cinquant’anni più tardi, la Serenissima Repubblica mette in vendita dei terreni comunali, i Malanotte acquistano i campi e i pascoli nella zona del borgo, determinandone lo sviluppo economico. Ed è proprio con i Malanotte che rifiorisce la produzione vinicola della zona.
In the heart of the Piave region is an ancient village, a guardian of centuriesold traditions, aristocratic wealth, and secrets that have never been revealed. Borgo Malanotte to Tezze di Piave (Vazzola) has been known to travellers since ancient times, when smugglers, robbers, pilgrims, and merchants stopped here before crossing the Piave River at the ford in Lovadina. In the seventeenth century, the old farm here grew into a village. And by the end of the century, it had taken on the name of its new aristocratic owners, the Malanotte family (sometimes ‘Malenotti’), among the most illustrious of the old Trentino families. In the early seventeenth century, a branch of the family moved to Venice to trade as cloth merchants. Fifty years later, the family bought the fields and pastures surrounding their village from the Venetian government, and started developing them. Under the Malanottes, wine production f lourished here.

Sulle navi mercantili i Malanotte, insieme alle preziose stoffe, stipavano in cambusa grandi carichi del vin da viajo, quel Raboso del Piave cresciuto tra le brulle zolle forgiate dal fiume sacro alla Patria, resistente alle insidie del tempo e che ora, nella sua versione superiore, porta il loro nome. Un nome che evoca la memoria delle travagliate vicende della nobile famiglia. Tra storia e leggenda si narra infatti che in una notte di luna piena del lontano XV secolo, il giovane nobile di Caldès, ultimo nato della blasonata stirpe, fuggito ai doveri aristocratici di un sontuoso ricevimento, si ritrovò nel bosco inseguito da un orso famelico. Egli ebbe la buona sorte di sottrarsi alle fauci della bestia arrampicandosi su un albero, riprendendo solo al mattino la strada di casa. Il terrore di quella notte contribuì a forgiare il carattere del giovane virgulto che ben presto divenne forte e determinato, ma fiero e ribelle.
Along with their precious cloth, the Malanottes filled merchant ships with vin da viajo (literally, ‘travelling wine’) for export. The wine in question was Raboso, which is still grown today in the same soil forged by the river. The finest variety of this wine now bears the Malanotte name in honour of the contribution of the noble family. History – or legend – tells that on a night of a full moon sometime in the fifteenth century, a young nobleman from the Malanotte family shirked his aristocratic duties at some lavish party only to find himself chased by a hungry bear in the forest. He escaped the jaws of the beast by climbing a tree and staying up there till morning. But the terror of that long night helped mould the character of the young man, who soon became strong and determined, but also proud and rebellious.
