Sembra emergere dalle acque dello Ionio l’isola di Ortigia, il cuore di Siracusa, che solo un ponte collega alla terraferma. È davvero incredibile come su una superficie così modesta si concentrino ricchezze tanto notevoli. Lo “scoglio” (così i siracusani chiamano affettuosamente la loro isola) è un intrico di vie su cui affacciano splendidi palazzi barocchi, dorati da una luce calda e intensa. Ma ciò che più sorprende è la stratificazione dei secoli: alle architetture greche si sono sovrapposte quelle normanne, poi quelle aragonesi e barocche, creando un miscuglio davvero irripetibile. È difficile sottrarsi al fascino del periplo dell’isola via terra – meglio ancora se via mare – per farsi stregare dai palazzi che scrutano il mare da sopra le mura. Il Castello Maniace si allunga sull’ultima propaggine dell’isola come possente baluardo difensivo fatto erigere da Federico II. Emozionante è la “scoperta” della Fonte Aretusa, legata all’antico mito di Alfeo e Aretusa, ma ancor di più l’ingresso nel Duomo che, dietro un involucro barocco, cela quasi intatto un tempio del V secolo a.C. Due autentici capolavori racchiude infine la Galleria regionale: la delicata e fragile Annunciazione di Antonello da Messina e il tenebroso Seppellimento di Santa Lucia di Caravaggio. With nothing but a bridge connecting it to the mainland, ortygia island, the heat of syracuse, seems to rise up out of the ionian. The wealth of treasures to be found on this tiny piece of land is truly amazing. The Scoglio – or ‘rock’, as the people of Syracuse affectionately know it – is a maze of streets abounding with beautiful baroque palaces, which appear to glow golden in the warm sunshine. but the thing that is truly magical about this island is how the centuries seem to overlap: greek buildings were built over by the normans, and then by the aragonese. Then came the baroque period. The result is an utterly unique interweaving of history and architectural styles. if you manage to shake off the spell cast by the sea around the island – which is even more enchanting experienced by boat – you’ll only be bewitched again by the buildings that overlook the sea from above the walls. The powerful maniace castle, built by frederick ii, stands on the southernmost promontory of the island. it’s an exciting experience to ‘discover’ the arethusa fountain, linked to the ancient myth of alpheus and arethusa. but it’s perhaps even more moving to visit the cathedral, which, behind its baroque walls, is home to a temple built in the 5th century bc that remains almost completely intact. finally, the regional art gallery is home to two genuine masterpieces: the delicate annunciation by antonello da messina and caravaggio’s gloomy but beautiful burial of saint lucy.
