QUESTO INCUTE TIMORE, CERTO, MA SPRIGIONA UN FASCINO ATAVICO A CUI È DIFFICILE RESTARE INDIFFERENTI. ECCO PERCHÉ CHI HA VISTO L’ETNA, CON LE SUE ERUZIONI DI POLVERI E DI MAGMA, DI SICURO TORNA A VISITARLO ANCORA. MA C’È UNA COSA DA DIRE: QUESTO VULCANO NON È SOLO FUOCO. ITS SLOPES REVEAL SwEET SURPRISES SUCH AS THE FRUIT GROVES, THE BROOM FLOwERS AND THE BEAUTIFUL NATURAL ENVIRONMENT wHICH wE COULD PRAISE FOREVER.

Prima del 1968, Taormina era un luogo particolare, quasi una translazione della dolce vita romana in Sicilia. In città arrivavano scrittori della fama di Truman Capote e D.H.Lawrence, attori come Greta Garbo e Liz Taylor nonché numerosi altri ‘estrosi frequentatori’ da ogni parte del mondo. A Taormina la vita mondana era frenetica e le notti passavano tumultuose all’esotico Cafè Concerto Mocambo tra playboy, artisti e donne bellissime... Il terremoto del Belice del 1968, però, portò con sé la paura di una ripercussione negativa sul turismo, il che spinse molti albergatori e affittuari ad appoggiarsi ai grandi tour operator, cancellando molto del carattere vivo e peculiare della città. Il fascino della vita bohémien lasciò così spazio al turismo di massa trasformando Taormina in una città per le vacanze, in fondo uguale a tante altre... ma per fortuna questa situazione era destinata a cambiare. Adesso infatti Taormina è tornata al suo splendore: innumerevoli sono ad esempio gli eventi culturali (di cui Taormina Arte è forse il più importante), i negozi esclusivi, gli hotel e i ristoranti capaci di stupire con vere meraviglie gastronomiche. Oltre alla costa, inoltre, anche l’entroterra è stato rivalutato con percorsi culturali e naturalistici e locali tipici immersi in una natura varia e rigogliosa. E poi ci sono le vestigia greche e romane... insomma, tutto è tornato forse ancora più bello di prima. Up until 1968, Taormina was a very special place, almost an extension of the Roman “dolce vita” in Sicily. Famous writers such as Truman Capote and D.H.Lawrence, famous actors such as Greta Garbo and Elizabeth Taylor as well as numerous other ”eccentric regulars” from every corner of the world could be found there. The social life in Taormina was intense and play boys would meet, along with the rest of the jet set, at the Café Concerto Mocambo where the famous latin-lover Robertino Fichera commissioned a satirical mural depicting a typical lively night at the café. However, after the earthquake in Belice in 1968, the owners of many hotels and apartments, fearing negative effects on tourism, turned to large tour operators, erasing much of the lively and distinctive character of the city. The fascination of the dolce vita stepped aside to make way for mass tourism which transformed Taormina into a city for holidays, a city which was basically the same as many others. Fortunately this situation was destined to change. Today Taormina has returned to its former splendor with unending cultural events, the most important of which is perhaps Taormina Arte. There are exclusive shops; boutiques; hotels and restaurants that serve marvelous culinary specialties. In addition to the coast there is also the inland area were one finds cultural itineraries, nature trails and typical country restaurants in varied and flourishing natural settings. Then of course there are the Greek and Roman remains to visit. All in all Taormina has returned to its earlier splendor. It is perhaps more beautiful than ever.
